Fibre testing & repair
Find and fix breaks and bad splices in the fibre network so every ONT behind them lights up again.
Overview
When several ONTs in one area go dark together, OPS Network raises an outage. The cause is usually a break in the fibre, a damaged joint or a failed splice. Work methodically: test light at the DP, then at the cabinet, then use the OTDR to measure exactly how far along the cable the break is. Repair jobs are timed on site, so you must stay at the location while the work progress fills.

The equipment — what everything does
OTDR / light meter
Shows the light level and the distance to a fault.
In game: Use it at the DP or cabinet during the job.
Fusion splicer
Re-joins broken fibres with a low-loss splice.
In game: Used during the on-site work.
Joint / splice tray
Holds and protects the repaired splices.
In game: Placed on the pole or in the chamber from /towers.
Tools & PPE
Optical light meter / OTDR
Measures how much light arrives down a fibre, and where along it a break or bad splice is.
Fibre fusion splicer
Melts two cleaned and cleaved fibres together into one low-loss joint.
Ladder
Reaches walls, ceilings and pole steps. Place it at a 1-in-4 angle on firm ground.
Cones & barriers
Keeps people and traffic away from open chambers, cabinets and ladders on the pavement.
Hi-vis vest & hard hat PPE
Makes you visible to traffic and protects your head from falling objects and low beams.
Safety glasses PPE
Protect your eyes from fibre shards, drilling dust and laser light.
Fall-arrest harness PPE
Clipped to a pole or anchor point, it stops a fall when you work above 2 m.
Standalone servers: tools are in your van (OPS Work → My van & tools). Items servers: collect them — and the job’s parts — at an OPS depot.
Step by step
See which lines are down and where — the break is between the last working point and the first dark one.
Set the GPS from the job page and set out cones on arrival.
Measure at the DP or cabinet and use the OTDR to find the distance to the fault.
Press 'Start work' on the job and stay on site. Re-splice the broken fibres.
Put the splices in a tray and close the enclosure.
When the time on site is reached, press Complete. Check lines come back on OPS Hub.
Health & safety
Working in the street
Risk: Traffic and pedestrians around open chambers, cabinets and poles.
Control: Wear hi-vis and set out cones and barriers before you start. Never leave a chamber open and unattended.
Working at height
Risk: A fall from a ladder or pole can cause serious injury.
Control: Use a ladder at a 1-in-4 angle on firm ground with three points of contact. Above 2 m on a pole, clip on your harness.
Laser light
Risk: Live fibres carry laser light.
Control: Never look into a cut fibre — assume it's live.
In game you confirm these in a risk assessment before starting. Skipping them on risky work can cause a fall or a shock — and it’s logged as a safety incident.
When it’s not done correctly
Leaving the site before the work time is done
The on-site timer stops: you must stay within range until it's complete.
Looking into a live fibre
A serious eye-safety breach. With incidents on, it's logged.
Not checking that lines came back
The outage stays open and customers stay offline, even though you closed the job.
