Overview

What it does

OPS Data builds and runs the data centres: halls of racks, UPS, cooling and generators. Its servers host OPS Cloud, OPS Web hosting, DNS and email for the whole city.

On OPS Hub

OPS Hub → Data & Cloud and the Operations centre.

On the phone

Engineers take data-centre jobs in OPS Work.

What players physically do

Everything below happens in the world, with your character, where other players can see it.

  • Build a hall: racks, UPS cabinet, CRAC cooling, standby generator
  • Fit compute, storage, switches and firewalls into racks
  • Cable racks to an internet router
  • Repair failed drives, PSUs, fans and boards
  • Keep the hall cool and on mains power

How the system works

How OPS Data's part of the world fits together — and what breaks when it doesn't.

OPS Data centres & OPS Cloud

Data halls

Racks, UPS, generators and CRAC cooling within 25 m form a hall. Racks need power (UPS or socket), a ToR switch and a CAT6 uplink to an online router.

Heat

Running servers make heat; CRAC units remove 30 kW each. Over 32 °C servers degrade; at 40 °C they shut down until it cools.

Power

On mains the UPS charges; in a power cut it runs on battery (longer at low load), then everything goes dark.

OPS Cloud

Customer VMs are placed on healthy 'cloud' role hosts in their region, restarted elsewhere when a host dies, or left 'host down' / 'waiting for capacity'.

Platform roles

Servers can run OPS Web hosting, OPS DNS or OPS mail. Once a role has servers, that service is down whenever none is reachable — websites time out, lookups fail, mail bounces.

Every job

Every job OPS Data does. Open one to see who it's for, what the customer pays, what the engineer earns, the certificate needed, the parts used and exactly how the server checks the work was really done. A job is only paid when its check passes.

Data centre operations

Keep OPS Data's halls running: replace failed parts, keep power and cooling up, keep racks online and add capacity.

Server fault

No chargeengineer earns $260

A server in the data hall has failed — replace the part ([E] on the rack).

Who it's for

Money

Customer pays nothing (fault, emergency or covered work); the engineer is paid $260 wages when it's signed off. The rest goes to the company.

Certificate

Data centre operations required to accept this job.

How it's created

Raised by a customer, a fault or staff for a specific site.

How the server checks it was really done

The failed server must be repaired and running.

Training: Data centre operations — the full step by step, tools, PPE and hazards for this job.

Data hall overheating Emergency

No chargeengineer earns $320

The hall is too hot — add or repair cooling until it's below the warning temperature.

How it's created

Raised by a customer, a fault or staff for a specific site. Emergency: tight SLA, top of the board.

How the server checks it was really done

The hall must be back below the warning temperature.

Data hall on battery Emergency

No chargeengineer earns $320

The racks are running on UPS battery — restore mains (socket / generator) before it runs out.

Rack offline

No chargeengineer earns $260

A rack has lost its network — check its ToR switch and the CAT6 uplink to the router.

Add cloud capacity

No chargeengineer earns $420

OPS Cloud is running out of room — install and bring online more compute servers set to the cloud role.

Training & safety

Each group of jobs has a course in OPS Academy: the lesson below, a health & safety module, an exam and a practical. You can read all of it here, or take it on OPS Hub → Classroom, in the OPS Academy app on the phone or laptop, or at opsacademy.sa in game.

Data centre operations

Keep OPS Data's halls running: replace failed parts, keep power and cooling up, keep racks online and add capacity.

Overview

A data hall is racks of servers with a UPS (on mains or a generator), CRAC cooling and network uplinks. Every running server makes heat. If cooling can't keep up, the hall warms, servers degrade at 32 °C and shut down at 40 °C. On battery, the UPS runs out. A rack needs a ToR switch and CAT6 to an online router. OPS Cloud customers' servers run on these hosts: when hosts fail, their servers restart elsewhere or go down, and OPS Web, DNS and mail can depend on them too.

The equipment — and what it does

42U rack

Holds servers, storage, switch and firewall by rack unit.

/towers → OPS Data. [E] on the rack → Install kit / the unit → Repair, Power, Role.

Compute / storage servers

Halcyon C1/C2 run cloud VMs or OPS services; S4 is storage.

Installed into the rack from [E] → Install kit.

ToR switch

Puts the rack's servers on the network. No switch, no network.

Install kit → Meridian TOR-48X.

UPS & generator

Keep racks powered through power cuts.

/towers → OPS Data → Racks & power. The UPS needs a socket within 3 m or a generator in the hall.

CRAC unit

Removes 30 kW of heat each.

/towers → OPS Data → Cooling. Needs a socket within 3 m.

Tools & protective equipment

Engineer laptop & console cable

Configures routers, NVRs and servers, runs speed tests and opens OPS Hub.

Torque driver

Tightens electrical terminals and rack rails to the correct torque — not too loose, not stripped.

Thermal camera

Shows hot spots: overloaded cables, failing fans, blocked server airflow.

RJ45 crimper & cable tester

Fits RJ45 plugs onto CAT6 and proves all eight cores are connected in the right order.

ESD wrist strap PPE

Grounds you so static electricity doesn't destroy server and network boards.

Health & safety — hazards and controls

Static electricity

Static destroys server components.

Wear an ESD wrist strap when handling boards and drives.

Manual handling

Heavy kit such as racks, UPS cabinets and cable drums can injure your back.

Lift with your legs, keep loads close, and use two people or a trolley for anything over 25 kg.

Electricity

Mains voltage can give a fatal shock and cause burns.

Never open powered kit. Isolate and prove dead with a voltage tester before touching terminals.

Heat & noise

Overheated halls and loud fans.

Limit time in hot aisles, use hearing protection.

What goes wrong if it's done badly

Leaving the hall overheating

Servers degrade at 32 °C and shut down at 40 °C, cloud servers go down, and the cooling check needs cooling ≥ the full demand.

UPS without mains in a power cut

The battery drains, every rack goes dark, and customers' servers and OPS services fail.

Rack without a working switch

Everything in it is unreachable — the rack offline job stays open.

Installing compute servers with the wrong role

Only 'cloud' role servers add capacity; the capacity check counts those.
